I'm completing my music appreciation homework and came across a much difficult question and was wondering if someone would assist me. "Which instrument is played by winding a crank?"

There's a medieval stringed instrument called a hurdy-gurdy which uses a crank to turn a rosined wheel to press against the strings instead of a bow.
I'm sure you could find some examples of how a hurdy-gurdy sounds on youTube.
It sounds somewhat 'drone-ish', similar to a bagpipe sound. It's very difficult to get any drama or emotion out of such instruments. (I'd go so far as to say that it is nearly impossible to get such feeling out of those instruments.)
