How do you see the topic on "Liberalism" uniquely modern?

How does this subject/topic different to what came before the Modern Age?How did the evolution of this subject in the Modern Age affect the different civilizations of the world?
Please help me with some information and annotated bibliography sites.

Gloria, I don't fully understand your question. Are you asking what life was like before liberalism (aka 'Enlightenment' - which wasn't very enlightening in some ways) or what life is like under (neo)liberalism? Wiki's discussion of classical liberalism should do the trick to clarify. Read Nikolas Rose or David Harvey for a better grasp of the subject. To discover how liberalism affected different (non-Euro-American) societies, you'll need to get into a little bit of colonial and post-colonial theory since it is an Occidental invention that has been exported haphazardly and with disastrous affect.
